Rachel Devlin & Jordan Shapiro - Father Figure Book Tour

Rachel Devlin & Jordan Shapiro discuss fathers, daughters, and feminism. Rachel Devlin is an associate professor of history at Rutgers University specializing in the cultural politics of girlhood, sexuality, and race in the postwar United States. She is the author of Relative Intimacy: Fathers, Adolescent Daughters, and Postwar American Culture (2005). In her most recent book, A Girl Stands at the Door: The Generation of Young Women Who Desegregated America's Schools (2018), she draws on interviews and archival research to tell the stories of the many young women who stood up to enraged protestors, hostile teachers, and hateful white students every day while integrating classrooms. Among them were Lucile Bluford, who fought to desegregate the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism before World War II, and Marguerite Carr and Doris Faye Jennings, who as teenagers became the public faces of desegregation years before Brown v. Board of Education. Devlin has received fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University. Jordan Shapiro is father to two children and step-father to two more. He lives in Philadelphia with his partner Amanda Steinberg. He teaches in Temple University’s Intellectual Heritage Program. He’s senior fellow for the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, and nonresident fellow in the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution. His book, The New Childhood (2018), received wide critical acclaim and has been published in 11 languages. His new book, Father Figure: How to be a Feminist Dad offers a norm-shattering perspective on fatherhood, family, and gender essentialism. This thoughtful exploration of dad-psychology—presented from an archetypal perspective—challenges our familiar assumptions about the origins of so-called traditional parenting roles. www.FeministDadBook.com

P&P Live! Parenting Panel: WHEN YOU WONDER, YOU'RE LEARNING & FATHER FIGURE

Gregg Behr, Ryan Rydzewski and Jordan Shapiro discuss their two new books on parenting and fatherhood with Anya Kamenetz. Purchase WHEN YOU WONDER, YOU'RE LEARNING & FATHER FIGURE here: https://www.politics-prose.com/event/book/pp-live-parenting-panel-gregg-behr-ryan-rydzewski-and-jordan-shapiro-when-you-wonder Gregg Behr and Ryan Rydzewski’s When You Wonder, You’re Learning: Mister Rogers’ Enduring Lessons for Raising Creative, Curious, Caring Kids introduces a new generation to the wisdom of Fred Rogers. The authors define the scientific scaffolding supporting Rogers’ “tools for learning” - curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. Anecdotes from scientists, teachers and friends – some who worked directly with Rogers – bring his values to life. These accessible tools can help children in the classroom and in their personal lives, preparing them to become good humans who love and respect their neighbors. Many parenting books explore parenthood from the perspective of the mother, but Jordan Shapiro’s Father Figure: How to Be a Feminist Dad provides much-needed context on the experience of fatherhood. Shapiro reflects on his own adventures in parenting through the lens of sociology, economics, philosophy, and gender studies. Challenging traditional paradigms of parenting, Shapiro argues that the conventional role of the father is due for a much-needed update. Readers are encouraged to rediscover their delight in parenting as they become the woke fathers that children of any gender can look-up to. Gregg Behr, executive director of The Grable Foundation, is a father and children's advocate whose work is inspired by his hero, Fred Rogers. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Duke University, Gregg holds honorary degrees from Carlow University and Saint Vincent College. In 2007 he founded Remake Learning, a network of educators, scientists, artists, and makers. He's also an advisor to the Brookings Institution and the Fred Rogers Center. Ryan Rydzewski is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh who taught fifth grade before earning an MFA in nonfiction from Chatham University. In addition to his work for nonprofits, he writes feature stories and creative pieces that have appeared in Pittsburgh Magazine, Hippocampus, and elsewhere. He lives in Pittsburgh with his wife Jacqueline, and their (very) old-soul beagle, Walter. Jordan Shapiro, PhD, is an author, educator, and researcher. He is Senior Fellow for the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, and Nonresident Fellow in the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution. He teaches in Temple University's Intellectual Heritage Program, and he wrote The New Childhood: Raising Kids to Thrive in a Connected World. He lives in Philadelphia with his two sons. Anya Kamenetz is an education correspondent at NPR. She is also the author of several books. Her latest book is The Art of Screen Time: How Your Family Can Balance Digital Media and Real Life. Her previous books include Generation Debt; DIY U: Edupunks, Edupreneurs, and the Coming Transformation of Higher Education, and The Test. Kamenetz was previously a staff writer for Fast Company and has contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York Magazine and Slate. Jordan Shapiro | Father Figure: How to be a Feminist Dad | Talks at Google

Jordan Shapiro discusses his book "Father Figure: How to be a Feminist Dad." Shapiro offers a norm-shattering perspective on fatherhood, family, and gender essentialism. This thoughtful exploration of dad-psychology—presented from an archetypal perspective—challenges our familiar assumptions about the origins of so-called traditional parenting roles. There are hundreds of books on parenting, but when it comes to books about parenting identity, rather than the nuts and bolts of raising children, nearly all are about what it's like to be a mother. Father Figure fills that gap. It teaches dads how to embrace the joys of fathering while guiding toward an image of manliness for the modern world. Jordan Shapiro, PhD is a globally celebrated American thought leader. He is senior fellow for the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, a Nonresident Fellow in the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution, and teaches in Temple University’s Intellectual Heritage Program. Jordan also has a Forbes column that has been read by over 5 million people around the world where he writes about global education, learning through digital play, kids and culture. Additionally, he is an international speaker and consultant whose fresh perspective combines psychology, philosophy, and economics in unexpected ways. His book, The New Childhood: Raising Kids To Thrive in a Connected World changed the cultural conversation about parenting and screen time; it received wide critical acclaim and has been translated into 11 languages.
